MacLennan: The Scottish Highlander

The Scottish Highlander is a famous stereotype, with certain mannerisms and peculiarities, and with both vices and virtues. This book, originally published in 1905, collects a wide variety of anecdotes about the Highlander, drawn from literature and local folk memories, and it shows many facets of the Highland caricature.

Some of the anecdotes feel very familiar in terms of the stereotype and the point of view on life, and can be recognised even in modern Scottish society. Other stories show facets of the modern character that are perhaps less prevalent in Scotland today, but that are still interesting from the historical perspective.

Linguists may find the representation of spoken language to be worthy of study, as the Gael does not always speak in perfect English, but struggles with translating thoughts from Gaelic. Representations of regional accents make the spoken text a little more challenging to follow, but again serve to make the collection of anecdotes all the more rich and fascinating.
