PVC banner of Joachim Meyer's diagram of the four openings as a training aid for hanging up.

This diagram from Joachim Meyer's fencing manual of 1570 shows how the four openings can be attacked sequentially. It is suitable for solo training with any one- and two-handed weapon.

The quadrants represent the four openings, and the numbers indicate the sequence of attacks from the outside in: top right, bottom left, bottom right, top left, bottom right, etc.
The attacks can be executed, for example, as combinations of Oberhau and Unterhau, full or half cuts, with a long or short edge, as Twerhau, thrusts, etc. This allows for effective training of transitions between different attacks, precision, footwork, and many other aspects.
